Social Media & Romantic Relationships

Are you really even dating if you Facebook status still says "single"? Everything is in the digital age, we get our daily new from social media, we communicate through media, media controls the simple aspects of our every day life. Social media has quite a few rules but add a relationship into the mix and everything gets complicated. When you in a relationship, everyone watches what you post and will analyze the words you use even the way you pose in a picture. A lot of times when people are in a relationship they tend to forget about respect when they are on social media, meaning a lot of people tend to rub it in others faces that they are taken, they do this by going to their partners account and commenting on every picture and liking every status, this is a way of "leaving their mark" so that others know not to mess with that person. Another thing that takes place in online relationships is that fact of having the same enemies. If you boyfriend/girlfriend does not like a certain individual then you too do not like that person. This also can be said about friends, if your partner is best friends with "Frank" than you become best friends with him as well. On the other hand, if the relationship ends then so does the friendships created with the relationship.

During the semester we viewed a power point that talked about the life cycle of relationships, and it talks about having a shared social network, the main thing I took away from this was that the relationships our partner has, begins to overlap with the relationships we have individually. So the small friends group we had before a relationship now grows once we are in a relationship and we get introduced to other friend groups.
